Different Prefix Please!

At what age does one change from a “miss” to a “ma’am”? Lately, have been called “ma’am” more often than I would like. It just feels weird since I know I do not look old for my age. In fact, the average guess is about 3 years younger than I actually am (The record is 7 years younger.) and, on occasion, I am still mistaken for a high school student. Shit, I even had my valid driver’s license taken away from me at a bar because the bouncer couldn’t believe I was 21!

Yet earlier today, as I was waiting in line at the grocery store a man in his 50s referred to me as “ma’am” in order to get my attention about something. Really?
