Narrators

After watching a couple hours of murder mysteries/stories with my roommates, I got to wondering: Where do they find narrators for shows like this? I mean, how do you get someone to read about 20 murders in a row? And what tone are you looking for? You can’t have anything too cheery because, well, the show is about death and murder. But you can’t have anything too somber because then the show will be too depressing to watch. And what does the narrator feel like when it is all over? How do  you read about murder after murder and walk away without a feeling of dread or loss of trust in fellow human beings? It has to leave some sort of effect.
